Art and Drama
The University Centre for Arts and Drama was created on 17th December 1999 at the National University of Rwanda with the mission of:
- Preventing and managing conflict and promoting positive values through the strategy of cultural actions,
- Communicating socially through arts,
- Promoting talent at the national level,
- Diversifying arts at the university and at the national level , by increasing the technical potential of artists and their training, and
- Spreading Rwandan culture at the national, regional and international level.
Physically distanced from the main university premises, UCAD stands on its own as a high education and production entity in the fields of dance, theatre and drama.
In a country that has very little resources and limited human capacity, UCAD has enhanced its position at the local and international level. iolence and its sequel have depleted Rwanda of human resources, of hope, interest for arts, and mostly of the will to learn from one another. The importance of the centre as a source of renewal that acts to counter the recent and latent division and resentment in the country, redirects efforts in the line of mutual understanding and tolerance, within the parameters of an academic institution.
As such the centre has the growing role of becoming a focal point in the development of new artistic initiatives, within and without the memory and confines of recent history. In other words, it revises the past, but with the focus on the future.
Because of that it becomes inclusive, even at a regional level, creating and showing the potential of a network with a broad and relevant scope in culture and development for the region.
